BEN CROTHERS (b. Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1987) is a Belfast-based curator. He received a BA (Hons) in American Studies and Film Studies from the University of Essex in 2008 – through which he also studied at the University of Miami, Florida – and remained at the University of Essex to complete his MA in Art History and Film Theory in 2009.
Ben has been developing his curatorial practice since 2010 at venues including Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast), The Naughton Gallery at Queen's (Belfast), PS² (Belfast), Ex Elettrofonica (Rome), and SOHO20 (Brooklyn). Selected curatorial projects include Psychic Driving (2013), Juvenilia (2014); GLUMBA SKZX (2015), Future Ruins (2016), and Get'cha Head in the Game (2017). Through such exhibitions, Ben has worked with and exhibited work by a varied selection of artists including: Marina Abramović; Dara Birnbaum; Robert Crumb; Adham Faramawy; Simon Fujiwara; Sanja Iveković; Stanya Kahn; Aidan Koch; Pil and Galia Kollectiv; Sarah Maple; Nicolas Provost; Cindy Sherman; Jeanne Susplugas; Tom of Finland; and Gina Wynbrandt.
Ben was the 2014/15 recipient of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's ACES Award for Curatorial Practice, working in collaboration with NURTUREart (Brooklyn) and developing projects for Comic Arts Brooklyn and Spectacle Theater. In June 2016, he completed a curatorial residency at Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, furthering his comics-based curatorial research.
Ben also writes on a freelance basis for the Visual Artists' News Sheet, published by Visual Artists Ireland; programmes Art in the A.M., a series of talks in local coffee houses; sits on the Board of Directors of the Northern Ireland Museums Council; runs The Book Club at Queen's University Belfast; and has worked at both London Art Fair and SCOPE Art Show, New York.
Since November 2015, Ben has been the Curator / Collections Manager at The Naughton Gallery at Queen's.
